1. Indication:

  • Atrial fibrillation/flutter
  • Left ventricular thrombus, treatment or prophylaxis
    Coronary artery disease
  • Venous thromboembolism, treatment

2. Instruction to use (How is this drug best taken)

  • Your doctor will tell you how much medicine to use. Do not use more than directed. Take this medicine at the same time each day.
  • 5 milligram (mg) or 10 mg tablet: Take with or without food.
  • 15 mg or 20 mg tablet: Take with food.
  • If you cannot swallow the tablets whole, you may crush the tablet and mix it with a small amount of applesauce. Eat some food right after you swallow the mixture.
  • Missed dose:
    • Once-daily dose: If you miss a dose or forget to use your medicine, use it as soon as you can on the same day. Do not use extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
    • Twice-daily dose to prevent serious heart or blood vessel problems (2.5 mg tablet): If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at your usual time.
    • Twice-daily dose to treat a blood clot (oral liquid or 15 mg tablet): If you miss a dose or forget to use your medicine, use it as soon as you can on the same day. You may take 2 doses at the same time to make up for the missed dose. This is only for people who take a total of 30 mg per day.

3. Drug-Drug Interaction:

Tell your doctor if you are using any of the following:

  • Carbamazepine, conivaptan, erythromycin, indinavir, itraconazole, ketoconazole, lopinavir, phenytoin, rifampin, ritonavir, St John’s wort
  • Another blood thinner (including clopidogrel, enoxaparin, heparin, warfarin)
  • NSAID pain or arthritis medicine (including aspirin, celecoxib, diclofenac, ibuprofen, naproxen)

 

4. Side effects

May include abdominal pain, back pain, dizziness, pruritus, wound secretion, cough, vomiting, and gastroenteritis.

5. Precaution

  • Do not stop using this medicine suddenly without asking your doctor.
  • Prior any surgical procedure report to doctor who treats you during the use of this medicine.
  • This medicine may increase your risk of bleeding. Be careful to avoid injuries that could cause bleeding. Stay away from rough sports or other situations where you could be bruised, cut, or hurt. Brush and floss your teeth gently. Be careful when using sharp objects, including razors and fingernail clippers. Avoid picking your nose. If you need to blow your nose, blow it gently.
